Nontraditional Dresses for Your Wedding or Elopement

Sweetwater’s picks for unconventional and unique bridal look inspiration

Wedding dresses don’t have to be white. Or long. Or even dresses, for that matter. As a photographer, I’ve seen brides rock everything from vintage jumpsuits to layered capes to DIY masterpieces that could belong in a museum. And let me tell you—when people wear what truly feels like them, the confidence is next-level. A nontraditional wedding dress isn’t just about breaking rules; it’s about owning your style, whether that means a bold color, a thrifted gem, or something so unconventional your grandma might need a second to process it. If tradition isn’t your thing, good news—you’ve got options. Let’s dive in.

.

Internationally Sourced

Why settle for the same-old local options when you can level up and source your wedding dress internationally? Think of it as a global treasure hunt for the dress, complete with exotic fabrics, unique designs, and that little je ne sais quoi. Plus, every time someone compliments your dress, you get to casually drop, “Oh, thanks—it’s handmade from a tiny boutique in *insert your dream country here.*  One of our brides, Liz,  actually bought her dress in Italy when she was studying abroad, long before she was engaged. She saw the gown and just knew she wanted to get married in it. Fast forward to her Philadelphia Museum of Art wedding where the dress couldn’t have fit in better.

Repurposed

If I were to choose another wedding dress, I’d go for something vintage. The intricate beading and thoughtful details give it a level of craftsmanship that feels rare today. The patterns are interesting without being overwhelming, and the overall style has a timeless quality that won’t feel outdated years down the line. It’s a way to make the day feel unique while still keeping things elegant and true to your style. Plus, there’s something special about wearing a piece of history on such an important day. Especially if it was previously worn by a family member! Marissa chose to repurpose her mother’s wedding dress for her vow ceremony and it was amazing.

Modern Jumpsuit

If you’re looking for something different for your wedding, a modern jumpsuit is such a cool choice. It’s super comfortable, and you won’t have to worry about tugging at your dress all day. Plus, it has this amazing editorial vibe that feels like it’s straight off a runway. A sheer cape adds a dramatic touch, making the whole look feel elevated and fashion-forward. It’s perfect for a bride who wants to break tradition while still feeling elegant and confident. Honestly, it’s the best of both worlds—stylish and easy to wear.

Bold and Colorful

If you’re looking to make a statement on your wedding day, why not choose a bold, colorful wedding dress? The possibilities are endless, and this is your chance to truly show off your personality. Whether you opt for a rich jewel tone or a completely unique design, it’ll surely make an impression. Plus, unlimited color options means you can choose what fits you best and makes you feel most beautiful. If you’re ready to shake up tradition and leave everyone talking, a bold dress is your secret weapon—because who says weddings can’t be a little spicy?

Short or Tea Length

Short dresses are perfect for those who want to enjoy a little more freedom to move, show off some killer shoes (or legs), or just prefer a more laid-back vibe. It can also be a practical choice for a bride looking to wear something she’s more likely to wear again or those having an outdoor destination wedding. Additionally, a short dress allows for more emphasis on accessories, such as shoes or jewelry, creating a bold, fashionable statement. If all of that wasn’t enough, a short wedding dress is awesome for brides who can’t decide between looks and want to go for a more fun reception look.

Off-white

An off-white dress is the perfect way for a bride to break tradition without going full rebel. It’s a little more forgiving when it comes to those inevitable wine spills or smudges (because, let’s be real, accidents happen). Plus, it still keeps the classic bridal look, but with just enough of a twist to make you stand out. Plus, the off-white shade gives a subtle vintage vibe—think of it as giving a nod to those glamorous old-school brides without the need for a lace-covered bonnet (not that those aren’t amazing.) Hazel wore this beautiful ivory colored dress to her Free Library of Philadelphia wedding and it was perfect.

Cape Overlay

A wedding dress with a sheer overlay is a total game-changer.  It’s regal, without feeling over-the-top, and timeless enough to make you look like you’ve stepped out of a dream. The best part? The options are endless. You can go for delicate embroidery, or shimmer with beading, maybe even get a little celestial or flower child vibe going. And let’s not forget, color is totally on the table. A sheer overlay adds that touch of elegance, while giving you the flexibility to show off your personality. Plus, it’ll make you feel like the queen of the day—without all the heavy, formal stuffiness.
