If you know Dutch, you know he’s not much for writing blog posts. He’d rather be behind a camera or deep in an edit with headphones on, making sure a song hits perfectly with the high five of a groom. So I’ll do my best to put into words what he’s too humble (and too busy) to say.
It all started when Dutch brought a Super 8 camera to a family wedding years ago. What came back from the lab was magic. It looked like a memory, not a video. The grain, the warmth, the way it moved…it felt alive. That one experiment turned into an obsession, and eventually, into a part of what we do at Sweetwater.

Super 8 is not traditional videography. It’s something closer to poetry. It’s about the rhythm of a day, the way light flickers through a doorway, or how a laugh looks when it’s caught off guard. There is no timeline or shot list, no perfect framing or smooth pans. It’s fluid, imperfect, and honest in the best possible way.
The format itself is entirely analog, meaning the footage is shot on actual film stock and developed in a lab. Super 8 doesn’t record sound, which gives it its unique charm. The finished piece is paired with music, often something that feels like the heartbeat of the day. The lack of sound isn’t a limitation—it’s part of what makes Super 8 so emotive. The music and visuals work together to tell the story in a way that feels timeless and personal. It’s something to consider when deciding which type of video coverage is right for you.

Over the years, this little piece of our creative world has grown. Laura, another talented member of our team, now shoots Super 8, too. Together, she and Dutch bring this timeless format to our couples who want their day captured with that extra touch of texture and emotion.
For us, Super 8 is a way to honor the spirit of a day, not just its timeline. It’s for the couples who care about mood as much as memory, who love the beauty in things that feel handmade and real. Each frame is one of a kind, a tiny moment of light caught forever on film.

That’s why we’ll always keep shooting it. It slows us down, keeps us present, and reminds us that art doesn’t need to be perfect to be unforgettable.
If you’re curious to see what that looks like, you can watch a couple of our favorite Super 8 films below.
